Fujiko Fujio’s works have become a digital phenomena that covers comics, anime and animated films, but they never get away from their simplistic concept – until the computer-generated feature Stand By Me Doraemon in 2014, which has been charged as “unique movie” and which tries to tell a mature, adult plot.

Takashi Yamazaki, writer-director and co-director Ryuichi Yagi, has a strong twist on time trips and body swap tropes, imbuing the story with plenty of mood and spirit, while his rich visual background gives the animation a surprising photorealistic consistency.
However, what matters most are the characteristics and the friendship between Nobita and those around him. Doraemon’s core premise – that he will benefit as much from upcoming generations as from those who followed him – is very well articulated in his future wedding speech – and this message is a timeless one.
